The world of whisky has evolved over the years to include popular spirits from countries across the globe. Indian Single Malt whiskies have been gaining popularity with consumers and whisky connoisseurs for years. The drink of choice in India is whisky and Amrut’s distillery has become famous for their legendary Indian single malt whiskies. They were the first Indian distillery to export an Indian single malt whisky produced according to Scotch Whisky Association standards. Since their first release they have gained global recognition and become one of the most popular producers of whisky.
The Popularity of Indian Whiskies
The people in India drink more whisky than any other country in the world. Until recent years many of that whisky was blended with imported spirits rather than solely produced in India. According to India West, there are said to be more distilleries in India than in Scotland. So why weren’t these distilleries producing popular whiskies? The main problem came down to taste. Originally, the neutral molasses spirt used in Indian whiskies made the spirits taste more like rum.
Amrut Distilleries was already producing incredible rums and began looking into how to also make the best whisky. Their first experiments combined barley grown in India and paired it with a small amount of barley from Scotland. Over the years, Amrut perfected their blends and they produced the very first single malt whisky to be made in India.
Amrut’s Single Malt
Amrut’s legendary Indian Single Malt Whisky contains 100% pure Indian 6 row barley. In Scotland the standard is 2 row barley and the 6 row used by Amrut produces more flavors and a slightly sweeter taste. This incredible spirit ages gently in new American oak barrels and ex-bourbon barrels. The flavors produce an outstanding richness and barley-oak sweetness.
What really brought Amrut whiskies to the global scene was due to world famous whisky connoisseur Jim Murray. He named Amrut Fusion single malt whisky as the third best in the world. Whisky enthusiasts worldwide sought out Amrut’s single malts and wanted to try for themselves. Amrut distillery has won dozens of awards over the years and become a powerhouse in the industry. The core range of their single malt whiskies includes Classic Single Malt, Cask Strength, Peated, Peated Cask Strength and Fusion.
