Introducing Amrut Triparva, a Triple Distilled Limited-Edition Single Malt Whisky
Amrut Distilleries has won over 50 international awards for both the distillery and their Single Malt Whiskies and Rums. Because of this, when they announce a new release, whisky lovers across the globe are eager to try it. With Amrut Triparva, the distillery is releasing India’s first-ever foray into triple distilled single malts.
There are only 5400 bottles worldwide of Amrut Triparva and 600 bottles are coming to the United States. Glass Revolution founder Raj Sabharwal had the opportunity to sample this exciting new spirit earlier this year in February. He was impressed with the depth of flavor and character and calls Triparva another triumph for Amrut Distilleries.
Amrut Triparva is triple distilled- what exactly does that mean?
According to Whisky Advocate, triple-distilled whiskey is common in Ireland and is even found at some American and Scottish distilleries. Through Triparva, Amrut is officially the first distillery using this method in all of India. The definition of triple distilling is when a spirit is distilled three times in a pot still before going to barrels for maturation. Typically, the spirit is distilled in a copper pot still and this results in a lighter, smooth spirit.
By adding an intermediate still in between the wash and spirit stills, the distiller is able to separate out any unwanted flavor compounds. This process has been extremely common in Ireland and Scotland and Amrut is bringing the method to India with this exciting new spirit. Whiskies that go through this extra stage in the distillation process are often described as extremely smooth because of the extra step.
With Amrut Triparva, every aspect of the whisky-making remains the same except for the number of times they distill the single malt. Because of this, those who are avid fans of Amrut spirits will likely notice a slight but distinct difference in the flavor profiles of double versus triple distilled whisky.
What are the tasting notes of Amrut Triparva?
As the first whisky in India to go through distillation three times, Amrut Triparva’s flavor is incredibly complex. The color is a golden brown and, on the nose, you’ll catch hints of salted caramel and coconut-vanilla custard. These initial flavors then transform into plantain and sweet oranges making you want to dive right in. Upon sipping, you’ll enjoy a fruit cocktail of flavors from creamy peach and melon to orangey citrus and vanilla custard. The finish re-establishes the honey and plantain flavors which blend perfectly with a mild spice dust.
According to Ashok Chokalingam, the head distiller at Amrut, this latest addition completes the course. Along with other whiskies like Amrut Spectrum (multiple oak wood barrel single malt) and Naarangi (a single malt with orange influence), Triparva is an uncompromisingly innovative single malt whisky.
Amrut Triparva is another victory for Amrut Distilleries that international whisky connoisseurs and collectors are sure to love. This single malt whisky makes its debut in America in late 2020 exclusively through Glass Revolution.
