Amrut’s Nilgiris Gin - Unique in it's Indian Ways

Amrut Distillery in Bengaluru India is famous across the globe as the first Indian distillery to export an Indian Single Malt Whisky produced according to Scotch Whisky Association Standards. They have been trailblazers since day one and their spirits combined have won over 50 international awards. While they’ve mastered the art of producing exceptional whiskies and rums, they are now venturing into the gin industry and the world is eager to give it a try.

Introducing Nilgiris Gin

Nilgiris Gin is Amrut’s newest spirit addition to their impressive portfolio. This craft gin is handcrafted at the distillery in locally made copper pot stills, the gin itself is named after the hills of Nilgiris which is where Amrut sources the botanicals used in making this craft spirit. Lonely Planet states that the name, Nilgiris, is inspired by the blue hills of Tamil Nadu since it was here that Amrut’s late Chairman and Managing Director, Mr. Neelakanta Rao Jadale had conceived the idea. These hills are also home to the Government Medicinal Plant Development which grows a wide variety of unique and distinctive herbs.

Unique Indian flavors

The distillers at Amrut are proud of their Indian heritage and roots and this pride is evident in everything they do. From the names of their spirits to the ingredients they source, India is woven into every aspect of their spirits from elements to bottles. Among the interesting flavors used in the new Nilgiris Gin is tea and spices which bring out the rich flavors of the mountains in India. These robust flavors combined with the light and refreshing botanicals from the hillside make a unique flavor that is one Amrut has perfected.

CN Traveller describes the flavor profile of Nilgiris as a floral, palate-cleansing mouthfeel of lemon grass, the spicy under notes of coriander, cinnamon, mace, and nutmeg, and an herbal bouquet of juniper berries, orris root and angelica and a surprise twist of brewed tea.

A True Passion Project

When asked why now, the Joint Managing Director of Amrut Distilleries, Thrivikram G Nikam told CN Traveller, “We think of our distillery as a kitchen where we keep adding to our offerings. Gin was in the pipeline for the last two years and we finally felt that this was the right time to launch it.” As a distillery known for their luxury whiskies and world-class rums, every venture Amrut undertakes is done with meticulous care and this was no exception. Master distillers traveled throughout the hills of India to experiment with plants, herbs, and botanicals before landing on the secret combination of ingredients for Nilgiris.
